I have worked with children and adults from a diverse range of backgrounds in many different settings. I have extensive experience in working with people who have experienced the following:
As a clinical psychologist, I consider and hold in mind numerous psychological and therapeutic approaches in my work. This multifaceted approach will enable us to think collaboratively from multiple perspectives during our therapy sessions, which will allow us to develop a rich understanding of you, the world you live in and the challenges you are facing. Below I describe some of the psychological approaches which I am particularly mindful of in my work.
By considering the interplay between our biological processes (e.g. genetics and neurochemistry), psychological processes (e.g. thinking patterns and emotional experiences), and social influences (e.g. family, work, culture), a holistic understanding can be developed of how these factors have influenced your experiences, habits and coping mechanisms. Combining this with a developmental approach, which considers how people develop and change over their lives, provides a rich understanding of how your experiences have shaped you and results in an individualised therapeutic experience with better outcomes.
We don’t exist in isolation and the challenges we experience are not independent of the world around us. Often, the difficulties we experience develop as a result of the contexts and systems that we find ourselves in. A systemic approach will allow you to understand yourself and your difficulties in the context of your relationships, social groups, and other groups you belong to. This provides an opportunity to understand patterns of behaviour and communication in relation to others and how to resolve patterns that are unhelpful.
Taking an intersectional approach to psychological therapy means recognising and respecting that each person has multiple intersecting identities, including gender, race and ethnicity, sexuality, ability and neurodiversity. These multiple identities intersect and interact with each other to shape your experiences of privilege, oppression, and discrimination.
In applying this approach therapeutically, I work with people to explore the interplay between their intersecting identities and the world’s social structures, power dynamics and systemic inequalities. This allows you to develop a deep understanding of the diverse experiences that can impact your social identity, wellbeing and mental health, and creates the opportunity for an inclusive and effective therapeutic experience.
