DBT emphasises the development of skills for emotion regulation & management, communication & interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and mindfulness. The underlying philosophy of DBT is rooted in dialectics; the process of exploring seemingly opposing thoughts and beliefs and understanding how they might all be true. For example, it is possible to simultaneously accept who we are and also acknowledge that it would be helpful to change in some ways.
DBT has a good evidence base for many mental health difficulties and research has shown that it is associated with improvements in emotional regulation, interpersonal functioning and overall quality of life. Integrating DBT themes into your therapeutic treatment plan could help you to: (1) find a balance between acceptance and change, (2) learn new skills for boundary setting and communication, (3) use mindfulness to be present in the moment without judgement, and (4) learn skills to tolerate, regulate and manage intense and difficult emotions.
